Amatsu is a whole body treatment that works with the body’s soft tissue (e.g. muscles, tendons, facia, ligaments and organs) to help re-balance other key mechanical structures (e.g. the spine, bones, joints and cranium)
Treatments or “Balances” are suitable for people of all age groups and those with limited mobility.
Amatsu combines a unique set of techniques that are movement orientated, that is to say the techniques allow us to engage with the body’s soft tissue to initiate movement at the site of injury. This helps to release painful spasms or restrictions around the injury and therefore supports the rebuilding of healthy neurological patterns and global body balance and proprioception.

So, what is Proprioception ?
It is important to talk about proprioception in relation to Amatsu because every balance (treatment) aims to support its restoration to your injury sites and your whole body.
Proprioception refers to the body's ability to sense movement, enabling us to know where our limbs are in three dimensional space without having to consciously look. This system is subconscious, which means that we don't have to think about making the movements. Proprioception is important in all of our everyday movements and, in particular, during complicated movements where precise co-ordination is essential.
Our proprioceptive sensory receptors are located throughout the body and are found chiefly in the muscles, tendons, joints and the inner ear. They provide information to your brain about joint angle, muscle length and tension, which are integrated in order to allow the brain to be able to detect the position or motion of a limb or the entire body in space.
Distorted information being received from any of the joints, tendons or muscles that have been injured will have a negative effect on your proprioceptive abilities and consequently your bodily co-ordination.
A more specific example of this is when the receptors within the joints or ligaments are damaged such as with a sprained ankle. This means that the information that is usually sent to the brain by the ankle ligaments will be impaired and, therefore, the whole body proprioception will be compromised. As a consequence many clients say that the joint feels odd or just doesn't feel right and that they are unable to walk easily in their normal way. This can leave the person with decreased co-ordination during their daily activities making them more prone to falling over and re-injuring themselves. In addition, they will also be walking differently to compensate for the injured ankle which could lead to other injuries or strains in other parts of their body.
Amatsu supports and works with the natural abilities of your body, aiming to aid the restoration of the proprioceptive quality in your body and movement.

As human beings, like all biological structures, we are mobile, omni directional, gravity independent structures built extensively of soft materials. We possess the ability to move naturally without the need for conscious direction of that movement and we are subconsciously aware of our physicality and location in three dimensional space at all times. Receptors all through our bodies feed information to our brains constantly about our physical condition and our location…. (are we standing up, sitting down, lying down, are our arms by our sides, are our legs in the air ?) and we don’t have to apply conscious thought to any of it….. aren’t we amazing ?
But, what happens when we get an injury or we manifest a condition or ailment ?

Well, an injury is simple, the body transmits pain signals to the brain from the site of the injury and we consciously take over management of that pain and repair of the injury, generally locally and generally affectively but more often than not we give no consideration to;
• The subconscious adaptations of the body to cope with pain or trauma
• The collateral damage caused to the body by treatment of an injury
• Adaptations made by the body during the recovery period
• Loss of proprioception at the site of injury and consequently throughout the whole body

With some injuries, particularly minor sports related injuries or falls or minor bumps and bangs we very often take them for granted and assume they will heal by themselves and of course they do, but it’s our bodies that take over that healing process, typically without conscious assistance. The problem here is that the body will make “Adaptations” to relieve pain and aid recovery.
Now, in a young active person who gets back to a bit of training after their injury those adaptations are generally reversed through the re-patterning of the body’s movement to accommodate the demands of a previously learned activity and so, relatively speaking there’s no harm done.

But, what if after the body recovers from a seemingly minor injury and we don’t have a mechanism that re-patterns the body? What if we don’t reverse the “adaptations” ?

Well, maybe nothing …… maybe the adaptations are so small that they don’t really matter??

So, what if some time passes and again we have another minor injury that the body takes care of and the whole process repeats again …. and again….. and again…. and again ……. ?

Then, all of a sudden, seemingly out of nowhere, we get this niggling pain in our hip, or our back, or shoulder or neck, …..

Surely that’s isolated?
Surely you must have done something?
Slept wrong?
Lifted the shopping wrongly?
Surely that can’t be because of all the little injuries over the last 5, 10, 15, 20 years that my body dealt with and adapted to each time?
Surely my body hasn’t run out of adaptations and needs help?

Look, we all end up from time to time with pains and aches and when they are bad enough we go to the Doctor or the Physio or the Chiropractor or the Acupuncturist or the Faith Healer or whoever we feel works for us, and we discuss the symptoms and where the pain is and when it started…. Etc etc…

What we rarely do is get to the root cause of the symptoms …… That’s where Amatsu is different!

My aim is to help you get to the root cause of the symptoms that you present with at my clinic. Getting to that root cause may mean that I can help you and together we can deal with the issue, injury ailment or condition or it may mean that finding that root cause necessitates referring you to a Doctor or clinical specialist.
Whatever it means, my aim remains the same: Your Health and Sense of Wellbeing!
