Welcome to the official page of The Wexford Historical Society, a place to promote and share the history of our fine town and county around the world.

The Wexford Historical Society (formerly known as the Old Wexford Society) was founded in 1944 by a small group of enthusiasts. The initial impetus was driven by the late Dr George Hadden, who continued to inspire and lead the society for thirty years. In those early years, the core mission of the Societies members was to ensure promotion of recording and researching the history, heritage and archaeology of the town and county of Wexford.

Seventy years on, with this in mind, the society remains committed to these values espoused by those pioneering minds. The Society executes this though a calendar of events year round. From September to April the Society holds monthly lectures on varied topics relating to the locale. The society also hosts an Annual Christmas Lunch in December, along with many day trips and small tours during the summer months. 'The Journal of the Wexford Historical Society' is the biennial publication by the Society, providing a medium for its members to participate in the historical debate of the county on a range of topics.

At the helm of the society stands a strong committee, pledged to the values of our founding members. This is done through the extensive planning needed to organise our annual calendar, but also through initiatives in the wider community. In January/February of 2014 WSH donated €2400 of its funds to the conservation of the Redmond Mausoleum, final resting place of the great politician John Redmond, which had unfortunately fallen into disrepair. As a result of this move, Wexford Borough Council has pledged to carry out the work that needs doing, totalling a cost of over €30000. The Society at this time also adopted St Patrick's Graveyard (St Patrick's Square) in Wexford Town in association with the Local Authority. Other smaller projects also take place year round.

Thank you for visiting our page. If you know anyone who may be interested in our Society, please share our page and posts with them, and we always appreciate your in puts on any topic relating to the history of County Wexford.

-WHS Committee.
