SUGRU’s innovative strategy is to design an individually-tailored therapeutic support plan which derives its origin from a variety of evidence-based approaches, while also remaining respectful of the needs of each and every family. The aspiration of SUGRU is to foster an open and accessible environment within which individuality, person-centred communication and the holistic well-being of children, adolescents and families are promoted and enhanced.

Three main types of therapeutic interventions take place at Sugru. Play therapy is a non-directive and child centred therapeutic intervention that assists children of all ages to process any difficulties they may be experiencing. Cognitive therapy is directive goal-oriented therapy suitable for children, adolescents, and adults whose negative thought patterns may be having a negative impact on their lives. Family therapy is a systematic therapy for the family as a whole and for each individual family member, to assist with the functionality of the family unit.

SUGRU also offers Developmental Play Sessions where children can come and explore a child-centred and strengths-based playgroup that combines arts and crafts, music and movement, fine and gross motor exercises, and sensory exploration in a safe and exciting environment.

Sugru affords parents the opportunity to come and meet with a child development specialist, about any parental difficulties they may be dealing with, which may be affecting their ability to cope with life’s stressors. Parents can arrange a once-off, drop-in style session to talk about the challenges of raising their child/ren in a confidential and safe place. Consultations can focus on the child’s development (social, emotional, or psychological) as well as external supports or other aspects of the child’s individual needs. Additionally a range of parenting workshops are available for parents to learn skills in specific areas of parenting.

Sugru offers an outreach service to school across the West and Midlands whereby a practitioner will visit the school to deliver a range of workshops to students, parents, and/or teachers. An outreach play therapy service is also available for schools.
