Killarney Counselling Centre was established as an initiative of the Franciscan Friary. The service has grown from a single room in 1994 to a purpose built centre which was completed in 2003.

The new centre includes three counselling rooms and a family room. The service changed its name to Southwest Counselling Services Ltd in 2003 and the name change was launched by Mary Coughlan, Minister for Social and Family Affairs. The new centre was officially launched by President Mary McAleese in 2003.

Throughout its history, the service has been committed to providing professional and affordable counselling services in a caring and confidential environment.

Kerry LifeLine was launched in November 2012. The purpose of Kerry LifeLine is to reach out to the community to prevent suicide. Kerry LifeLine works with individuals, families and schools in the aftermath of a suicide. The service also provides free one to one counselling services.

Southwest Counselling also facilitates low cost counselling in participation with Kenmare Family Centre one day a week on Thursdays in Kenmare.
