Hair extension after care
Which Hair Extensions are gentlest on your hair? Will hair extensions damage my hair?
All hair extensions will be gentle on your hair, its the person applying, maintaining and removing the extension which can cause unnecessary damage. Hair extensions must be applied neatly without catching other hairs or product getting onto hair where it should not. Hair extensions must be kept in only for the recommended times so that they will be easy to remove and the hairs that you would normally brush out everyday removed as they have still shed and are trapped within the bonds. Shampoo, conditioner and product residue also builds up under the bonds and needs to be removed while they are easy to do so within 3-4 months as they will harden and matt with the hair that normally sheds making them difficult to remove after the 4 month period. Removals must be done patiently, gently, with care, using the correct removal products and tools. Gentle patient person applying and removing extensions = your own hair in perfect condition always.

The correct way to dry my Hair Extensions?

Brush damp hair gently with paddle brush and once smooth and tangle free rough dry hair with hair dryer until it is almost dry. Then using a ceramic brush blowdry hair extensions in small sections until completely smooth and dry. Straighteners can also be used but are not necessary if you blowdry hair properly. For styling products you may use any of your normal styling products with your extensions, (hairsprays, mousse, and gels.) Do not apply any oils, serums or waxes or anything oily to the extensions as this may cause them to tangle or your installation to loosen. Dry shampoos and leave in conditioners work well with extensions.

Can I dye my Hair Extensions?

Yes you can dye our remy hair without losing any of the hair extensions lifespan. If your hair is the virgin colour it can also be bleached / highlighted. For colouring we recommend you go to a salon or professional if you wish to change the colour of your extensions. We advise that you test the colour on a small part of the hair first as not all hair dyes are compatible with already dyed hair extensions. Drop us a line beforehand if you like so that we can advise you what is best to use to achieve the colour you are going for with the hair you have. We cannot accept returns on any items that have been dyed or altered in any way.

How long can I wear my hair extensions for?

If your hair is fine, damaged its recommended you take them out after 2.5 to 3 months. Normal or thick hair is 3-4 months depending on the method and in some cases 5 months depending on the method and your lifestyle. You can reapply straight away but by removing them you get a chance to remove your own hair that will have naturally shed and haven't been brushed out along with all the shampoo, conditioner and styling product residues that build up under the bonds or in the tracks before they matt and harden into your own hair. Regular patient and gentle removal and re-installing along with proper application will ensure your own hair will stay healthy while wearing hair extensions.

How do I remove Prebonded/Glue Extensions?

If you can get someone to help you with the back its much faster. If you are doing this correctly removal will take approx 1-1.5hours.
Make sure to follow the steps below so your own hair stays in perfect condition and your removal is fast and gentle. DIY Removals cost approx €10-12

You will need:

1. Small bottle of almond oil (other oils are ok but almond oil works extremely fast and effectively compared to others) You can buy this in any health food shop for €2-3
2. Small pliers. Woodies have a small black an decker one with an orange handle.
3. Empty spray bottle to put acetone in..you can buy this from boots or may have an empty one at home.
4. Acetone aka nail varnish remover...just make sure you dont buy the acetone free ones.
5.Fine tooth comb

STEP 1
Soak your bonds for 2 hours prior to removal with the ENTIRE small bottle of almond oil..this will make the bonds nice and soft and your hair really oily so that the matts comb out easily.

STEP 2
Put the acetone into empty spray bottle. Spray each bond generously before using pliers to crush the bond to break its hold unto your hair. Dont spray them all at once but rather do quick spray in between crushing the bonds.

STEP 3
After crushing the bonds you will be able to slide them down the hair shaft. Now you need to use a fine tooth comb and comb out any residues and dead hair that has been trapped for the duration of your install.

STEP 4
Once you have combed out all the hair that you lose naturally you can now wash your hair and style as normal

Dont worry if you comb out lots of hair..this is hair that you have lost over the last few months and have not been able to brush out...this is why removal within 3-4 months is required, so that these shedded hairs do not become too difficult to remove.

If you have a huge amount of matts and tangles in your own hair this is because while wearing extensions you did not brush these sections throughly so tangles had a chance to build up.

These always look much worse than they are so ignore anyone that tells you to cut them out. Just patiently comb them out with the fine tooth comb while the oil is still in your hair and remember to brush more throughly with your next install.

Matts are able to be brushed out without much damage up to approx 7-9 months but you should still not wear extensions any longer than 3-4 months so that you never get any damage in the first place.
